The Group was officially founded in December 1955 by Mrs. Eveline Milner (Wendy). She was Harting first Cub Scout Leader and had 10 Cubs when she started. (The Badge on the home page was designed for our 40th Anniversary). In the beginning Cubs used to meet in an old Nissan hut at Foxcombe, but later Wendy applied to Uppark House to purchase an old army hut situated in South Gardens. The hut was no longer used and was in a state of disrepair. Meade-Featherstonehaugh sold the hut to the Group for £50 (a lot of money then). Much fund raising went on around the village and eventually it was bought. The Cubs moved in and immediately started cleaning and decorating their new Headquarters. Wendy was concerned that if and when the old wooden hut collapsed that the Group would be left with nothing and so approached Uppark House again with a request to purchase the land that the hut stood on. Permission was granted and for the sum of another £50 the land was bought. By the 1960’s the Committee decided that money ought to be raised and put by to build a new Headquarters and so a Hut building account was opened. By 1991 the decision was made to go ahead and make plans to rebuild. While the old hut was being demolished and the new one being built the Group held their meetings at the village hall, and in 1994 the new Headquarters were opened and Wendy Milner was their to cut the ribbon! Looking at the old records we estimate that the Scout section opened in 1961, and the Beaver section in 1995. Today’s HQ is built of brick with an environmental outer to blend with the surrounding area.
